Fearlessness is the foundation of freedom. Fear binds us, making us feel stuck within our own being. Yet, we are blessed with simple hand gestures that can dissolve these chains. One such gift is the Abhaya Mudra—the gesture of fearlessness.
The Abhaya Mudra, one of the most recognized hand gestures in yogic and spiritual traditions, represents fearlessness, reassurance, and divine protection. In Sanskrit, "Abhaya" means “without fear,” or a divine assurance/ protection too and this mudra is often depicted in images of the Buddha and Hindu deities blessing their devotees with courage.
Beyond its symbolic meaning, the Abhaya Mudra holds powerful therapeutic benefits on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. It harmonizes the subtle energies, calms vata imbalances, and nurtures inner strength.
How to Practice Abhaya Mudra
Sit comfortably with a straight spine.
Raise the right hand to shoulder level, palm facing outward, fingers upright and close together.
Rest the left hand on your lap or thigh.
Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and hold the mudra for 5–10 minutes, repeating an affirmation such as:
“I am safe, I am fearless, I am protected.”
