Case of a Sudden, Severe Allergic Reaction/ Hives

A young woman’s unexpected allergic skin reaction—and the importance of looking at the "whole picture"

Imagine waking up one morning with a swollen face, puffy eyes, swollen lips, itchy hives —when you have never had an allergy before.

That is exactly what happened to a young adult woman recently.

And the most challenging factor was - there was no obvious answer to what had triggered the reaction.

Was it something she ate?

A new supplement?

Summer's hot temp? Sun exposure?

An environmental allergen?

A viral infection?

Or a combination of several factors?

Sometimes, the body gives us a very dramatic response without immediately telling us why.

It Started With a Sore Throat

2 days before the skin reaction appeared, she developed a sore throat.

The next day, she spent at the commons at the FIFA watch party.

Then next day went on the beach when it was above 90 degree Fahrenheit

That same week, several other things changed in her routine. She had:

  • Started a new job and gone to work for several days.

  • Taken one dose of a new hair-growth supplement, although the ingredients were described as all natural.

  • Attended a friend's graduation party and that was outdoor.

  • Potentially encountered new and outside foods as many meals, environmental exposures and other allergens.

Nothing seemed obviously unusual at the time. Then she woke up the next morning.

The Sudden Appearance of Hives and Swelling

She initially developed small vesicular eruptions on her face, particularly around her forehead and chin.

Soon, her eyes became swollen.

Then her lips became swollen.

Hives and urticaria appeared on her legs, thighs, hands, palms and the backs of her hands.

The itching was significant, and the family understandably became concerned.

She was taken to urgent care, where she was prescribed a five-day course of steroids and advised to follow up with her pediatrician.

The pediatrician continued the treatment, and a strep test was negative.

During those five days, she improved.

The family understandably hoped that the episode was over and also went to watch the football match in high and hot temp.

Unfortunately, it wasn't.

The Symptoms Returned

Approximately two days after completing the steroid course, the symptoms came back.

She experienced:

  • Severe, almost violent itching

  • Burning sensations

  • Swelling

  • Hives

  • Extremely dry skin

  • A feeling that her skin was tight and stretched

  • Significant peeling

  • Dramatic darkening of the affected areas

  • She used cold compressions/ towels on legs and hands.

Some of the areas where the hives had appeared became dark purple and almost black in appearance before the skin began peeling especially her calves and thighs and lower abdomen look very dark and dry. She literally finished a bottle of coconut oil - as the her legs and hands were so so dry!!

It was understandably frightening for both the young woman and her parents.

An appointment with an allergist was arranged so that the possible trigger could be investigated.

In the meantime, the family reached out to me for homeopathic support.

Looking at More Than "Hives"

When we see a condition such as urticaria, it can be tempting to focus only on the diagnosis:

“This is hives. What is the remedy for hives?”

But individualized homeopathy takes a different approach.

The goal is to understand the individual pattern of the illness.

The Homeopathic Approach

Rather than prescribing solely based on the label "urticaria," I considered the complete symptom picture and the way the reaction was unfolding in this particular person.

A homeopathic remedy was prescribed based on her individual presentation, along with a sarcode as an intercurrent.

Within approximately using the doses for 3 days the family reported a striking change.

The swelling had resolved.

The intense itching was gone.

The burning had subsided.

The sensation of tightness had disappeared.

The hives were no longer present.

The severe dryness also began to improve.

Over approximately the following week, her skin continued to recover and her normal skin tone gradually returned.

For the family, this was a tremendous relief. and as she is absolutely fine they cancelled the allergist's appointment. The total days she was treated with homeopathy were only 5 days and symsptoms never came back once we stopped the treatment. In fact all her later symptoms resolved too.

When the Cause Is Still Unknown

This case also highlights something important about allergies and sudden skin reactions:

Sometimes we don't know the trigger immediately.

That doesn't mean the symptoms aren't real.

It means that identifying the cause may require time, careful history-taking and appropriate medical evaluation.

An allergist may be able to help identify potential triggers through history, examination and, when appropriate, allergy testing.

Keeping a record of foods, supplements, medications, environmental exposures, new products and symptom timingcan also be useful when trying to identify patterns.

Could Homeopathy Help With Allergic Symptoms?

Homeopathy is often sought by people who experience recurrent allergies, hives, skin reactions and other immune-related complaints.

The homeopathic approach is individualized. Two people with the same diagnosis may receive completely different remedies because their symptom patterns, triggers, sensations and overall presentations may be different.

In this particular case, the response following the homeopathic consultation was encouraging. However, one case cannot establish that homeopathy caused the improvement, nor can it determine what triggered the original reaction.

That is why I believe in an integrative approach: appropriate medical evaluation when needed, while also looking carefully at the individual as a whole.
